Q: What is NMTAW and why is it important?

A: National Massage Therapy Awareness Week was created by AMTA to raise public awareness of the benefits of therapeutic massage, attract media attention to nationwide activities being carried out by AMTA chapters, professional members, students and schools as an opportunity to demonstrate their professionalism and skill. It is an excellent opportunity for AMTA members across the country to share the importance of consumers choosing AMTA members because they are highly qualified professionals who contribute to the heath and well-being of the public through massage.

When we moved to Arizona from Kansas in 1998, owning a massage therapy studio was the furthest thing from our minds. Neither one of us had a back ground in massage therapy. Darrin earned his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and Shauna completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, both at Wichita State University.

After several years of Darrin working in the software consulting industry, and Shauna working for an insurance company, as a part-time photographer and “domestic engineer”, the opportunity to invest in a new franchise came about. Our adventure began after visiting the Fitness Together Franchise Corporation in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, the parent company of Elements Therapeutic Massage, and learning the concept of creating a successful studio.

Opening a business in the “health and wellness” industry, to create a better quality of life for others was the biggest selling point. This taste of entrepreneurship opened our eyes to what our true passion is; business ownership and development.

Elements team helping in Joplin, MO

Shauna and Darrin Boyd, owners of Elements in Glendale, felt a desire to go to Joplin to assist their family who was affected by the recent storms in the Midwest. Shauna and Laurie, Elements' manager, were able to spend four days doing what they could to help the residents of Joplin, MO. The devastation was so vast, so there was a lot of work to be done.

Thank you to everyone that has donated to the Joplin disaster relief so far. We will continue to collect donations of cash and gift cards during the month of June to assist those who have been affected by the tornadoes. We have given part of the donations to our family and their church, and we plan to give the remainder of the donations to a young couple. They had just finished remodeling their 90 year old home 4 days before the storm. Thankfully they were out of town when their home was damaged, but it is not repairable.

We saw many homes needing repairs and many more that were just not there anymore. The city of Joplin has a long road ahead of them, but the residents' spirits are high and they are determined to come back stronger than before.
